Dramatic upheavals in the education landscape call on us to reimagine our work in a post-pandemic era, cope with persistent staff shortages, deal with deepening divisions in educational politics, and reckon with continuing educational inequities. All the while, we must prepare young people to thrive in a future society that itself faces challenges to democracy, economy, and climate.
These challenges are daunting, but they are not insurmountable. And, with a supportive community of committed and capable colleagues, it is possible to achieve almost all things. This is why the School Leaders of Color Organizational Development Collaborative exists.
The knowledge and skills needed to confront today’s educational challenges are part of a repertoire of key organizational development principles that the most effective organizational leaders and changemakers have always had at their disposal. But effective leadership is not only about having the right knowledge and skills. Effective leadership, especially in today’s education landscape, is also about leveraging essential knowledge and skills ‘in the moment’ to make the right decisions when faced with complex, pressing problems, the solutions to which are often high stakes. Leaders are better able to accomplish this when they have an expert collegial community of support and learning. The School Leaders of Color Organizational Development Collaborative is a live online workshop series and affinity network for deepening understanding, sharing insights, and tackling real-time problems of practice experienced by education leaders of color and related to the key organizational development principles involved in effective school leadership. Led by HGSE professor Ebony N. Bridwell-Mitchell, an expert in organizational leadership, this program provides a space for PreK-12 school leaders, and especially leaders of color, to gain peer support and expert guidance to solve real-time problems of practice in their respective schools. The interactive series encourages participants to work collaboratively with a cohort of colleagues as they experience three kinds of learning opportunities:
The 10-week live online series will be comprised of bi-weekly 90-minute webinars, the topics for which participants will identify and choose at the beginning of the program. Possible topics may include but are not limited to the following: disrupting entrenched beliefs and practices, navigating informal networks and group dynamics, fostering organizational alignment and coherence, encouraging staff motivation and commitment, managing strategic change in institutions, and more.
